Humor need to understand other cultures. If they just

Humor is the way to make people happy. Nowadays, you can find humor sources from everywhere; every cultures have their own humor. Some languages and cultures make some people have misunderstanding and some humor is taboo for some cultures. How do we understand humor across cultures correctly? It depend on different languages, personalities or type of jokes  Understanding humor across cultures and language is difficult for most people. However, there are many kinds of humor can be easily understood, too. Humor across cultures depends on personality and etiquette of their own cultures. Some cultures might have some similarities with other cultures, such as some countries in west might have personalities or manners similar with other western counties and the different cultures between countries, too. That is the reason comedian who need to play a joke across cultures need to understand other cultures. If they just play a joke without knowing other cultures, it might be taboo to their audience. Personality is about behavior, ethnicity or faith. Why do behavior important for humor? Because of lifestyle in cultures, it is about people always do or what is strange to do. Ethnicity and faith are a way to define people, too. Those personal factors are important to play jokes in each cultures. The behavior are depend on lifestyle. Some audiences might not be funny to watch a joke who act like audiences behavior; they might think is rude to them; for example, Otaku in Japan (people who are obsessed with something) do not like when comediantry to act like them in negative way; for example, comedian perform a joke about bringing a cartoon figure to restaurant. Next, the difference in generations is another reason to misunderstanding a joke; this gap between generations make an audience in another generation not get their joke. Some generation might have different lifestyle such as hobby, media or environment; for example, last 30 years disco music is popular but right now people in new generation do not know about it.Ethnicity is very important because the comedian have to understand their audience’s culture first, if not, they will not understand a meaning of the other humor. Some countries might have different lifestyles, even people in the same country. The comedian have to know about their lifestyle or the culture to understanding their audience behaviour and which joke that they can play without being racist the audiences. Faith is very important because many people are susceptible to their feelings. So comedians need to aware of it. In some religions it might be taboo for comedians to talk about their beliefs. 24 percent of people said it is OK to make fun of religion. Next, it is not proper for teachers to tell religion joke in classroom is more than five in six (Briggs, 2017). According to Briggs (2017), “the study findings also indicated others should exercise greater care about what they make fun of, and who they pick on”. Last, many respondents said it going to have a lot of trouble to make a joke if Islamic more than Christian (Briggs, 2017). In Thailand, comedians cannot play a joke about Buddhism because it is for Thai people. Etiquette is about politeness and taboos. What you can do in some cultures, you cannot do in other. Some jokes might be taboo to them because the comedian does not know their etiquette well. However, you need to know their culture before you play a joke because you will know that which ones are taboo or which ones are polite to them; for example, in Thailand is taboo if you play a jokes about their part of body; it is unacceptable for them. Another etiquette is language, when you calling someone by some vocabulary or slang; it might be taboo to calling them by that vocabulary; for example, it going to be taboo if you call Asian people “yellow skin”. Different humor across language, even if humor that is producing without language such as visually or musically, all of them need to explained in language. That is why the linguistics need to have a study about humorology or gelotology (Attardo, 2017). Different languages might make audience misunderstand about humor that comedians want to serve. Different humor across languages have some problems such as mistranslations and slang or modern words. So, they might need some people who are experts in language to help them to explain or translate their joke to avoid mistakes in a different language.  Misunderstandings always happen when comedians try to joke with people by using their own language and they do not understand. Some of the vocabulary might be rude for them or some words are taboo. So they should know which words they can use in different cultures by asking to native speaker or someone who know the language that they need to play a joke to make their audience understand the joke.Translation from the original sometimes change the meaning of the original language to make an audience enjoy it. The translation is difficult to keep their original meaning because some  vocabulary in other cultures is not funny or they do not have that vocabulary in other cultures. If they keep their original meaning, it might be taboo for other languages. It is similar to fiction books, the same translator might change something a bit to keeping tone of that fiction. When an audience doesn’t laugh at the joke, it is not mean translator lack of humor but it means they lack translation; they need to know which word can be using and keep the tone of that joke. Slang and modern vocabulary is difficult to define, but you can use synonyms to define in other languages, too. Most of vocabulary changes a bit or uses new vocabulary to replace old vocabulary. Some sources need to use new vocabulary to create a new joke following the trend. In Thailand, we have new slang or modern vocabulary every year. Some of them might be a short trend, such as when someone failing to get something. In last 2 years, we used “slip” to be slang vocabulary but last year the new slang was changing from “slip” to “bird”. Slang jokes are funny for specific communities such as in gamer communities, schools or workplaces. This is another reason why comedians need to know about slang before they play a joke and they need to know the audience, too.  Types of comedy classified by drama class school, they have 30 different comedy forms (Types of Comedy, n.d.). This research will make the comedy that can be most easily understood across cultures are slapstick jokes and character jokes. Both of them are can be easy to understand.  The slapstick is a type of physical comedy, characterized by broad humor, absurd situations, and vigorous, usually violent action (The Editors of Encyclopædia Britannica, 2017). This joke can be easy to understand because this is depending on how action and physical stunt, too. Because of an action, some actions might understand by looking. For example: someone walk on the street then he slip because of banana peel laying on the street. Some people might laugh for that situation. The slap joke might be hurt. In Thailand, This type of joke are very popular because of  “JackAss Movie”. However, some people do not like it because it about violent action. The character joke is easy to understand because they always play a joke by role playing such as Mr.Bean; he was a famous actor. In the role play, Mr.Bean was breaking to the social rules of behaviour and it is universally understood as funny (Mills, 2014). Sometimes, he does not act like bad person or impolite to other people but he just has silly behaviour; that is why many people laugh when he performs. Even if we are in different cultures, we still understand his behaviour. Role playing is very famous in many cultures, even in Thailand we have a lot of the comedians, too.(Mr.Bean, n.d. Source: Https:// French culture, they have mime joke, mime perform by acting; they are using only movement, gestures, and facial expressions (What Is a Mime?, n.d.). Mime jokes are being widespread. Most character jokes are funny because the way they are performing; it is not about language. The famous comedian in this kind of joke is Charlie Chaplin. He was born on April 16, 1889, in London, England. Charlie Chaplin showed on the big screen. He was “The Tramp” character because he has had strange movement. Because of his movement, it make him  become famous in the silent-film generation. Chaplin were making films such as City Light and Modern Times. He died in Switzerland since 1977 (, 2017).(What Is a Mime? n.d. However, humor across cultures depend on the personality and etiquette. Most languages have their own humor, but humor language is difficult to translate because they need to change the original meaning to another language by keeping the tone of humor. That is another reason to misunderstanding a joke. It is suggested that the comedian need to understand a comedy across cultures, they might need some one who are expert in that language or that culture to explain it correctly.
