Introduction:

 Glossophobia
is the fear of public speaking also known as speaking anxiety The word
glossophobia came from the Greek ?????? gl?ssa which  means tongue, and ????? phobos which means
fear or dread. Some people have this phobia, while others may also have broader
social phobia or social anxiety disorder. Many people think stress-induced speech
anxiety which are only present during public speech. Some individuals with
glossophobia have been able to dance, perform in public, or even to speak (such
as in a play), or sing if they cannot see the audience, or if they feel that
they are presenting a character or stage persona other than themselves. Being
able to blend in a group (as in a choir or band) has been reported to also
alleviate some anxiety caused by glossophobia. This can be happened when an
employee has to prepare  a presentation
to the rest of his department and becomes completely frozen. It can happen at a
social gathering where the thought of meeting new people causes you to become
nervous and anxous

Most of thepeople who are
suffering with speaking in front of public choose to deal with their problem by
avoiding public speaking situations. Avoiding is an ideal situation for many
people, but chances are that at some point in time it will be expected to
discuss a group project in front of a class or deliver a speech to co-workers.
Understanding the causes and effects of this fear is the first step in
developing a strategy to overcome the anxiety. There are
millions of people in the world who fear talking in front of people. It’s a
fear that people thought if they are talking in front of people that they will
reject them. This inferiority complex makes it difficult to achieve your goals.
It takes control of your life. If anyone wants to be successful in his or her
life by overcoming this fear, they have to speak to people on regular basis.
This will improve their condition and will help them to be more effective
speaker in their life because at one point this will be needed.

As a result glossophobia may hamper the sufferer’s
ability to further his or her academic, social or career opportunities. If left
untreated, this can lead to loneliness, poor self-esteem, depression and
isolation. There are helpful strategies to manage and cope effectively with glossophobia.
For those affected, speaking in front of a group can trigger feelings of
discomfort and anxiety. With this can come uncontrollable trembling, sweating,
and a racing heartbeat. You may also have an overwhelming urge to run out of
the room or away from the situation that is causing you stress. Glossophobia is
a social phobia, or social anxiety disorder. Anxiety disorders go beyond
occasional worrying or nervousness. They cause strong fears that are out of
proportion to what you’re experiencing or thinking about. Anxiety disorders
often get worse over time. And they can interfere with your ability to function
under some circumstances.

So, to overcome ‘Glossophobia’ some steps should be
taken so that no one have suffer in the long run mainly the students’ needs to
practice more and more from their childhood because it will help them in their
future.

 

Research Questions:                        

This research aims at finding the underlying reasons
behind the fear of public speaking .Through my research I would attempt to

answer the following questions:

1. What is Glossophobia or Public speaking anxiety?

2. what are the reason behind this phobia?

 

 

Hypothesis:

Glossophobia or Public speaking anxiety is a common
issue among undergraduate students. From my research I expect to find
institutional pressure, nervousness, fear of judgment, lack of practice are the
main reason behind the fear of public speaking. It is also expected that the
fresher or first year student face it most. This fear is more prevalent among
women, students who participate in few activities involving speaking to groups
of people, and those who have a self-perception of their voice as high-pitched
or too soft. I also expect that student should get guidance from their teacher
or help from friends would help them to overcome glossophobia . And this fear
should be overcome because public speaking is the most important skill for
university student .

 

Research Methodology:

 For my
primary research I would like to conduct an online survey where I will ask 30
random university students to fill out a questionnaire which I will be
developing, to better understand and incorporating the perspectives of
university students on my research topic.

 For my
secondary research, I plan to collect information form a vast collection of
books, periodicals, journals and other relevant supplementary materials, which
I will access through the university library/database and the World Wide Web.

 

Data
Presentation and Analysis:

In order to collect
sufficient data about the ‘Glossophobia’
among students I have hosted a survey questioning various aspect on my topic.
The survey was consisted of tenquestions and there were 30 respondents. All of
them were the students of different universities. The data collected is
presented and analyzed in the following pages:

 

I have hosted a survey on 70% male and 30% female
students from different universities to collect data .

 

 

 

In my research I asked the respondents whether they
aware of the term Glossophobia . 65.5% said yes and 34.5% said no. which means
many students don’t know about glossophobia .

 

 

 

 

 

For my research my 3rd question to the
respondents was “What do you think is the main cause of Glossophobia?”. 70.4%
of 30 students think fear of judgment is the main reason behind Glossophobia.
33.3% think lack of preparation and 25.9% think bad language skill is the main
reason behind this phobia.

 

 

 

 

 

 This was my 4th
question to 30 respondents whether they like to give speech in front of public
for first time. Result shows 69% students get nervous when they have to speak
in public for first time . 10.3% think speaking in front of public is annoying
.And 20.7% excited to speak in public for first time .

 

 

 

 

My 5th question was “how anxious do you
feel when you think abut public appearance ?” 44.8% feel anxious 41.4% feel
extremely anxious and 13.8% feel little anxious .its seems 80%+ students get
anxious about public appearance .

 

 

 

 

That was my 6th question to 30 random
students about their public speaking activity in university. It shows 72.4% did
such activity  and 27.6% students never
attended .

 

 

 

 

My 7th question
to 30 respondents was about their opinion about improving their public speaking
skill. From the above graph it is shown that 51.7% students strongly agree that
they have to improve their public speaking skills.37.9% agreed that they have
to improve their speaking skills and 10.3% neutral .No student disagree with
that.

 

 

 

   my 8th question to
30 respondents was about getting feedback after presentation . 48.3%  said yes they got feedback after giving
presentation . 37.9% said sometimes and 13.8% said no they don’t get feedback .

                                                                               

 

 

 

My last question to those respondents was “what is the best  way to solve glossophobia ?”

Where 75% said practice is the best way to solve glossophobia .35% think
mental strength, 32.1% think preparation and 7.1% think family and friend
.majority responses for practice .

 

 

Summary of
findings :

The data I collected
partially matches my hypothesis. After doing the survey, I found that still
students don’t like public speaking whether it’s in school or university. Again
I found that they didn’t like to take part in extra curriculum activities in their
school. Most of the students know what ‘Glossophobia’
is, what are the symptoms, best ways to solve it.

As I said earlier, my
hypothesis was partially proven right. Because some of them said they didn’t
take part in any activities where they had to give presentations. That means
they didn’t have enough opportunities in school and college. So they face
problem while speaking in front of public. My turning point is that the
respondents said that practice is the best way to solve glossophobia .Its also
mean that lack of practice is a reason behind glossophobia.

From the 30 respondents
almost all agreed  with that they have to
improve their public speaking skill and most of them think fear of judgment is
the main reason behind glossophobia. 
Because of not getting enough opportunities in school and college
fresher and first year students face this problem most.

  

Recommendation
:

From the data collected in my
research it is evident that ‘Glossophobia’
is seen in almost all the students. All the students should practice more and
more so that they can overcome this fear as early as possible. In the future
he/she have to present in front of the class or in any business meetings. If
they have practiced by standing in front of the mirror and talking this help to
overcome this fear. I have some limitations as well.

 

Conclusion:

Glossophobia is a common
among university students . Specially among the fresher , because in our
country students of school and college don’t get enough opportunity to speak in
front of public . And practicing is the best way to solve this phobia .
