People Should Be Able to Identify as Whatever They Want to BeHave you ever had the urge to express your feelings or ideas but can’t because of other’s judgements? Well, it is the same for people who feel that they don’t belong to the mainstream category of male and female, but cannot decide their own gender according to society’s beliefs. People should be able to identify themselves as whatever they desire since it is their choice and not others. While an individual may not be able to choose their desired sex at birth, they can choose how they are identified on the gender spectrum. People that do not identify as either female or male are known by a variety of names which includes gender nonconforming, genderqueer, gender non-binary, genderfluid, and much more. These groups tend to totally reject the traditional conception of a “gender binary” by adopting gender roles and traits outside society’s typical expectations and other times taking traits from both masculinity and femininity. These non-binary people have a disorder called gender dysphoria. It is the condition of feeling one’s emotional and psychological identity as male or female or to be opposite to one’s biological sex. While this is not a mental illness, it is recognized as a medical condition. People who have gender dysphoria have an persistent urge to be or live like their desired identity and if society can’t accept them, they may start to feel depression and anxiety. With depression and anxiety in their life, it may lead to suicide or self-harm. According to The National Transgender Discrimination Survey, 78 percent of non-binary people suffer from discrimination, victimization, and rejection from friends and family. This leads them to feel that they don’t belong and want to commit suicide.  As we know, gender is a vital part of a person’s individuality and self-being. Although many non-binary people accept themselves, they are not accepted in society which causes them to not be truthful about their gender identity. For example, some people believe there are only two genders due to their religious aspect. Religious groups such as Christianity, expect everyone to act accordingly to the Bible, but people that believe they don’t fit in either category want to be accepted by their religion. So, having more than two genders in every religions should be accepted by all. They may also experience more negative mental health outcomes due to prejudice and discrimination by their religion. If society and religion agrees that there are more than two perceived genders then it will allow those who are non-binary to be able to finally feel accepted by society.     On the other hand, some people may argue that gender and sex is the same, but according to Merriam-Webster Dictionary, gender and sex are two very completely different things. Sex means the genitalia you have or the physical, biological attributes that make you either male or female. However, gender is different. Gender is internal. It is how a person identifies themselves. How they feel about themselves.     So if we all come together to accept that not everyone are the same and that there are more than two genders, we can make it easier for these people to be able to feel safer and comfortable in society.
