as well as topics which I have most developed, improved and benefited from

I will further highlight how I can continue to excel in these areas in order to
achieve better grades in future which will propel me to a more desirable degree
at the end of my program.

First
of all, at the beginning of 2017 I was thinking of taking up a career in
Childcare Nursing but then I realised my passion is in travel and tourism
industry, however, having a passion in tourism was not enough because I was
unsure of what to expect from this course because I knew that university will
be quite different from college. Hence, the first skill I picked up from this
module was critical thinking, yes, I have heard teacher, policy makers and
business executives talk about critical thinking but I have always wondered
what critical thinking was about and why it was essential and important.

According to Paul and Elder (2006), everybody has the ability to think because
it is an integral part of the human nature to do so, however, most of our
thoughts if left on its own is uninformed, distorted, partial, biased and
down-right prejudice. Therefore, Facione (2011), stated that critical thinking
must be purposeful reflective judgement that reveals a well-reasoned examination
of standards, evidence, methods, context and conceptualizations which helps to
decide what to do and what to believe. Thinking critically has enabled me to
question without fear of reprisal and to discover different solutions to a
situation, it has also helped me to read extensively and grow intellectually.

Furthermore,
this module has helped me to develop my academic writing skills because prior
to starting this course I had never written in a well-structured academic style,
I really struggled to articulate when sentence and use proper grammar. I also
did not know how to write a clear and easy to understand essay or report. Norris
(2016), stated that, “rather than count every word, we should try to make every
word count and remove any extra or useless word”. The main purpose of academic
writing is not to show off everything you know about a topic but to illustrate
that you can think critically and understand that topic (Whitaker, 2009). Academic
writing has helped me develop my skills in organising, analysing and evaluating
information to support my arguments and to responding to others’ arguments
which enables me to express myself better. Bailey (2015), further established that
academic writing should have a clear and logical organisation (Introduction,
body and conclusion), it should also incorporate the use of authentic texts and
examples from a wide range of discipline. Before I started this module, I could
speak fluent English well enough to help me with normal life activities such as
shopping, meeting people and travelling but I came to realised writing academic
essays and reports is much more difficult than speaking English because you had
to research, use citations, paraphrase and reference your work. This was a
skill a was not familiar with because in college I was not required to
reference my work and it took a while for me to adjust and adapt to the new
system.

Researching
and sourcing for relevant books, journals, website or text has always been a tedious
and stressful task for me because it is very time consuming and could be very
frustrating at times. Researching for essays and reports has always been
difficult for me, it was something I had to contemplate on before choosing to
attend the University because you have to do a lot of reading and dissect of
various books and journals before arriving at the relevant subjects to include
in your report or essay. However, since starting this module I have been able
to carry out a lot of research independently and now I see researching as a
thinking game. Perutz (2010), suggested that in order for you to carry out a
good research, you must first of all understand the question and then you
gather your sources such as books (reading list), you can then compare and contrast
the perspective of various authors which further enables you to form a thesis
and write up a method or plan to follow. At the
end of your researching, you should have notes organised according to the
topics and areas you would like to discuss, also the notes should reflect the
shape the essay will take in its final form. I now enjoy researching because it
is quite an exciting and interesting stage in writing a report or essay, it
broadens your knowledge of various topic and disciplines.

In
conclusion, everybody has the ability to think because it is an integral part
of the human nature to do so and Thinking critically has enabled me to question
without fear of reprisal and to discover different solutions to a situation. Academic
writing has helped me develop my skills in organising, analysing and evaluating
information to support my arguments and to responding to others’ arguments
which enables me to express myself better. Since starting this module I have
been able to carry out a lot of research independently and now I see
researching as a thinking game and although I was very scared and anxious at
the beginning of the semester I can say that I have improved in areas I have
discussed above. Furthermore, I would like to improve in other areas of studies
such as time management because I still lack proper time management skills as I
always find myself lagging behind and submitting assignments late this is as a
result of procrastinating and I have noticed that I study better in the library
rather than at home. I will also aim to improved my presentation and communication
skills because I have stage fright each time I am speaking in public. Overall,
I can say that I am a more improved version of me since I started this module.
