The message of Lumen Gentium is that in Christ, the Church becomes light for the world and this light shines more brightly to the extent that her members open themselves to the transforming power of Christ’s love. Some of the more relevant aspects of a theology of ‘light for the nations’ are: The church is seen as the people made up of the unity of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. The Church is the kingdom and the mystical body of Christ. It has both a visible and a spiritual nature. Jesus died for the whole world. Through the Holy Spirit and Church, we learn to proclaim the Good News. The Church is compelled to fulfill the last instructions given by Jesus Christ himself to baptize, preach, and teach. The Church will labor endlessly in order to see that all peoples brought into the family of Christ. At all times God has chosen to raise His people up as one body in order to prepare a way for the Messiah which is Christ. In Christ, all the people of the world are called to live in this family by baptism. This family is brought together to live a communal life of charity and truth to be an instrument of God. Through the strength of Christ, His Bride will be perpetually renewed. When it comes to spiritual life, parents need to be the first teachers of the faith to their children. In order to grow the Church more perfectly, Jesus instituted many ministries and hierarchical positions in order to form a visible Church, consisting of priests, deacons, and bishops. These important points further push us leaders in Catholic education to focus on what the Vatican truly says about the Church and where we fit in as evangelists to our students and communities. The Dogmatic Constitution of the Church influences my vision as a Catholic educational leader and reinforces my responsibility as a member of the body of Christ to others. Jesus died for the whole world and it is our duty as a member of the community of Christ to ensure that the message of his love is known by everyone. Even those students non-catholic but who have chosen to be in our community. This really accentuates the importance of our celebrations, masses and Christian symbols that we have at school. Moreover, it also reminds me that educators really must live an exemplary life.  In order to accomplish this, we should have strong ties to our local parish so we can set good examples for the people in our schools. The document also emphasizes the fact that parents are primary educators of their child. I believe parents today have somehow completely abandoned this responsibility to schools. Many parents in our school don’t know our faith but they still have a connection to the Catholic traditions. Other parents, even Catholic, often feel that teachers should teach the faith and do not really understand why they should be guiding and assisting in this process. It is important to help parents acquire the necessary skills so they can be “the first preachers of faith to their children”. As a Catholic school leader, I understand more why parents need to be active members of our school community in their own faith formation and the faith formation of their children. The impact of a fully participating community in the mass and the liturgy would have a massive impact on the lives of the children, as well as the lives of the families.
